INSPIRATION TOURS SUP TOUR LOCATION DESCRIPTIONS IN NICARAGUA
Casares: time in transit from Montelimar 1 hour. This beautiful and unspoiled coastal region is home to a small, local fishing fleet of about 25 pangas (24 to 26´wood fishing boats with a 50 to 75HP outboard). Life is simple in this sleepy town but rich with fresh sea food, including lobster, snapper, marlin, dorado, barracuda, and snapper. The bay, beach breaks left and right hip to head high at all tides and sports a small river break just to the north about 5 minutes walk. Toward the south east about 1-2 mile you can see the remnants of artificial pools that were built in the 50´s and filled daily by the rising tide. This was a famous place to hang out and cool down with the family up until the early 80´s. A French/American built a small 10 room hotel on the beach that serves up wonderful meals. We´ll enjoy lunch here on the day visiting Casares, La Boquita and Huehuete while soaking in the local environment and even surfing right in front of the hotel while waiting for lunch to be served.
La Boquita: time in transit from Montelimar 1 hour This small, Pacific Coast town also sports a little local fishing fleet. It is located about 15 minutes from Casares. The environment here is very laid back and quiet. Local kids are frequently found out on the beach playing soccer and some even practicing surfing on boards that were left behind by surfers who drifted through this area years before. Along the beach line you will find several local comedores, palm roof, open air ¨restaurants¨. The surfing here is all beach break. Good in all tides but best on mid to high tide coming and going. Normally hip to head high year around. Just pick your wave. Huehuete: time in transit from Montelimar 1.5 hour (30 mins from Casares) Pronounced, way- way- tay, has got a little bit of everything spread out over about 4 miles of beach. Beach breaks, reef breaks, point breaks with favorable conditions in all tides. The better breaks occurring at mid to high tides coming and going. This is a great photo opportunity location as there are some large, natural tidal pools created by rocky breaks. The waves frequently crash against the rocks creating an amazing ambiance and fantastic photo possibilities. Waves here range from hip high to head and ½ high. There are some nice opportunities to SUP around the rocky points pending ability and surf conditions.
Tola: time in transit from Montelimar 2 hours (15 mins from Gigante) This place has a beautiful crescent moon shaped bay surrounded by high rocky cliffs on the north and south sides with a secluded sandy beach. The environment here is spectacularly beautiful with clear water, excellent snorkeling and SUPing opportunities with a nice knee to hip high beach break. Remote, stunning and scenic.
Gigante: time in transit from Montelimar 2 hour (30 minutes from Tola) The name Gigante means Giant. The name comes from a rock formation that when viewing from the Tola side, looks like a giant laying on his back. The rocky point in the water look like 2 giant feet, while the low laying peninsula appear as legs and more inland a gently rising mountain gives the appearance of a chest and head. This legend goes back hundreds of years. The town of Gigante is a quaint and simple fishing village with a fleet of about 30 pangas. The beach break in front of Gigante brings a descent wave at all tides with heights typically chest high breaking both ways. There is a shallow bay that offers some cool SUP paddling on the south end and it is even possible to cross the rock point to the adjoining Tola Bay pending surf conditions and client ability-strength. We will enjoy lunch on the beach in a local restaurant that serves up the catch of the day…literally.
Puerto Sandino: time in transit from Montelimar 1.5 hour Was officially founded in the mid 50´s as a means to improve shipping lanes between Nicaragua and the rest of the world. Thousands of tons of fish, shrimp, oysters, fruit, grains and petroleum were shipped out of this port up until the late 70´s. Now the town has more of an appearance of a ghost town or a little place trapped in some sort of a Twighlight Zone episode. It’s a peaceful place and home to one of the largest estuaries on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. Here we´ll hop in a 26´panga and head out into the estuary locating a secluded arm to paddle. The environment presents incredible views of the volcanic mountain chain of western Nicaragua. The shoreline is chocked with the thick network of manglar trees and their roots. Since this part of Nicaragua is a fly way between North and South America and no one visits the huge estuary, this is a great way to get up and close to a variety of migratory and domestic birds. This is a flat water paddle. We´ll eat in Puerto Sandino at the same restaurant we did last time you were here. Then move on down to Miramar for an afternoon session. If we have some people that want to try to SUP or surf the wave in front of the estuary, like we did, we could come back a second day for it or try to combine the experience in the same day pending tide.
Miramar: time in transit from Montelimar 1.5 hour (15 minutes from Sandino). A small fishing village found a few miles south of Puerto Sandino offers a shallow bay for some descent mild water SUPing/touring with a sizeable beach break that does chest to head and ½ in mid to high tides coming and going. Breaks left and right, best at higher tides due to some rocks in the vicinity that are much more friendly in higher tides. The little town has a tiny fishing fleet and locals tell me that they are starting to see a few more ¨Cheles¨ passing through here. Chele means ¨white folk,¨ dude. And I know they didn´t come here for the fishing.
Masachapa: time in transit from Montelimar 5 minutes. We will paddle from Montelimar as part of the tour. This little town has one of the larger local fishing fleets in Nicaragua. Buyers from Managua come here daily or have contracts with the fishermen to deliver their seafood back in the city. The locals are very colorful with tattoos and ear rights and a variety of scars from the hard life of fishing and drunken fights with friends and family on the weekend nights. It looks like a rough town as do the men, but they are mostly harmless and very curious to know people from the outside. Hard working and risk takers are the men that fill the fishing boats around here. Barcelo, Montelimar is located about 1 mile up the beach and between Masachapa and Barcelo, one will find a variety of cool SUPing opportunities. In fact, we can paddle to Masachapa and pick whatever wave you want. Additionally we can paddle around the old dock and view the old light house or even go ashore and visit with the locals.
Proposed Itinerary would flow as follows pending surf conditions:
Day 1 Afternoon of arrival from airport, SUP around the Barcelo Beach area
Day 2 Paddle to Masachapa, return to Barcelo for lunch. Paddle up the coast toward the Barcelo Estuary in the afternoon or surf Barcelo Beach.
Day 3 Puerto Sandino Estuary flat water paddle and Miramar paddle/surf experience (or surf the wave at Sandino)
Day 4 Casares and Boquita and/or Huehuete dependent on surf conditions Day
